Domain Name Guide

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your websites address, much like an address of a bricks and mortar Company. Your domain name is where prospects will go, being presented with your website on arrival. When you go to a search engine like MSN, you are going to MSN's domain name, www.MSN.co.uk or Google's www.Google.co.uk.

Choosing Your Domain Name

When choosing your domain name it is a good idea to choose one that is easy to remember. Generally this means a short domain name. It is also good practice to choose a domain name that can be easily associated with Company, using your Company's name is good practice. If your domain name has already been registered by someone else, try to abbreviate it.

Types of Domain Name

There are several types of domain name you can register eg .com, .co.uk, .org, .net and .info to name just a few. If your target audience is the UK, it is a good idea to use a .co.uk. This will inform people that your eBusiness and website is based in the UK and is aimed at UK residents. If your target audience is Global then use a .com domain name as no geographical region will be associated with it.

You can also point more than one domain name at one website, allowing you to use a different domain name for each region your targeting or preventing traffic theft from persons registering similar domains to obtain traffic from your customers miss typing your domain name.
